Tahiti and her Islands...

Reported by JoMar All rights reserved.

Well, we have almost travelled completely around the world. Vancouver-Montreal-Amsterdam-Ireland-Egypt-Capetown,South Africa,Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore-Australia-New Zealand and now here we are in Tahiti and soon off to California and back up the coast to Vancouver. Our only regret was our cancellation of one of our destinations; India. All things considering we did the right thing at the time. India will still be there to visit at a later date, right?

So we flew from Christchurch, New Zealand to Tahiti and crossed the international dateline; flew on April 12 and arrived on April 11-weird huh?

On the flight I was lost in a book as usual and Marc started to chat with a French man beside us. During the conversation Fabien asked us where we were staying and we said we would just look after landing as that is what we have been doing up until now. Our well travelled companion said that Tahiti is not like other destinations and that we would not find accommodation that easily and that it is very expensive. So he invited us to stay at his house with him and his girlfriend and roommate. So we said yes! Ended up sleeping on their open-aired verandah and it was nice. Anne, Fabien's New Zealand girlfriend picked us some bananas off a tree for breakfast!

So the next day Anne brought us to a very cool hostel and we settled in and proceeded to discover Papeete, which is the capital city of Tahiti. Papeete is very nice. Marc says it is a lot like South America in feel and sight. We went to a coupla nice beaches on Tahiti. One with black sand, so that was cool! We invaded a couple of high-end hotels and used their pool and beach and had lunch also. That was fun!!

After a few days in Papeete we decided to head for Moorea.

Moorea is an island 30 minute fairy ride from Papeete. This island was not only one of the most beautiful islands of our trip , it was also one of the most beautiful islands we have ever seen! Got into a hostel/camping ground area that was awful! The room just had two beds, windows with NO screens and was so hot and uncomfortable that we could not sleep at all the first and only night there! But the real deciding factor to find another place to live was the sighting of a few cockroaches that were the size of 747 airplanes! These things even freaked me out and I don't usually get freaked by bugs and stuff. So needless to say we were off to the hotel down the street; big clean aircon. room with a pool and restaurant! Not in our budget at all but worth every penny.

We decided since we would be not paying for accommodation at all for a month in California (thank you Stephen and Allan) that we could afford to treat ourselves. Tahiti is French and very expensive, but very beautiful. Just to give you an idea of how expensive it was; $10-15 US dollars an hour for internet, even in Europe it was never more than 6 dollars an hour. A bottle of beer; $10 dollars and $15 dollars per bottle on the weekends!!! The people are very warm and friendly.

So in Moorea we also rented a car, for $150 US for 24 hours, the standard rate, or else we would have never seen the island. It was worth it! Had lunch in a really nice restaurant called The Blue Pineapple, with a breathtaking view!

On our last day on the island we found a wallet on the ground outside our hotel (with almost $300 US dollars in it) We asked at reception if the wallet belonged to a guest and they said no. So we looked up the phone number in the book, according to his name, and left a few messages that we have his wallet and that we would be leaving today on the 1:30 ferry and told him were we would be. Anyway he and his wife found us before we left and was so so grateful that we found his wallet that they drove us to the ferry dock.

After arriving in Papeete we made our way to the airport and waited 5 hours for our flight to the City of Angels, Los Angeles.

We were to meet our friends Sarah and Deen, from Vancouver, in Los Angeles... to enjoy Disneyland for 3 days.  Even had plans to have breakfast with Mickey Mouse, BUT poor Sarah has developed a very excruciating herniated disc in her neck and they had to cancel. We were so disappointed, as you can imagine, they were too. Hope you are feeling OK, grated the morphine!

We both have mixed emotions about the near end of our journey. Neither one of us wants it to end. We have the travel bug and have already talked about other places we want to visit in the future. If we could afford it we would both travel for another year or more! But on the other hand we are both looking forward to seeing our family and friends after so long away from home. One of the best things about this trip has been befriending people from all over the world!

We now have friends in Germany, France, England, Ireland, Scotland, Greece, Thailand, Singapore, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and Tahiti.

Well see you all in Hollywood!!

Bye for now

john
