City - El Cerrito overlooking the entire San Francisco Bay.
My 1930 Mediterranean house sits in the hills of El Cerrito overlooking the entire San Francisco Bay, directly opposite the Golden Gate Bridge as you can see in the panorama above. A quiet retreat in the East Bay yet only a half hour drive from downtown San Francisco and all the city has to offer. If you prefer, the safe, clean and convenient BART transit system the station is just a ten minute walk away, as is the Express bus stop for downtown San Francisco. If you are working or vacationing in the Bay area, El Cerrito provides an ideal centralized location. Just over half an hour into the city of San Francisco, to Napa and the beginning of the Wine Country, fifteen minutes to the University of California at Berkeley, and ten minutes to either the birthplace of California cuisine Alice Water's Chez Panisse restaurant and Berkeley's famed Gourmet Ghetto or the beautiful wilderness preserve of Tilden Park for walking, hiking, biking and picnicking. More time to explore? Half an hour takes you to Mill Valley then on to Muir Woods and its redwood groves, or Frank Lloyd Wrights magnificent late masterpiece Marin Civic Center. Enter through a wooden gate into my serene private front garden. Inspired by Oriental landscaping you can relax on the slate and redwood terracing. Listen to the wind in the bamboo or the trickle of the fountain in the pond. This is a perfect warm weather spot for sunny morning coffee, or soothing afternoon shade. The cool tiled entry hall with its original English Art Deco Chinoiserie lantern leads into the morning room. Relax and enjoy the morning sun and views of the garden through the arched windows. The ceiling light in this room is French Art Deco and the wall lights are original to the house. My piano is available for serious pianists. If you enjoy entertaining then the dining room with its stylish original Art Deco table which folds out to comfortably seat 6. Asian antiques and fine English and American artwork complement the mood. The kitchen features a gas JennAir stovetop with electric convection oven, dishwasher, fridge, microwave and - as I enjoy cooking and entertaining - every convenience and appliance you could wish for. Now enter the newly built spacious living room with its tall ceiling and wall of windows framing the San Francisco Bay. A bistro table with chairs provides an ideal spot for breakfast or any casual meal.Comfortable seating, large screen TV, DVD and VCR plus a gas flamed fireplace mean that summer and winter you can enjoy magnificent views or the best in entertainment from the comfort of your own space. The Golden Gate Bridge lies directly across the water and at certain times of the year the sun sets directly behind it. To the right is beautiful Mount Tamalpais with its wooded slopes and breathtaking views. Open the French Doors and relax on the large slate floored deck. The stainless steel cabled railing, inspired by marine designs, leaves the view stunningly unobstructed. On a warm evening enjoy cocktails or dinner on the deck, and the barbeque is ready to go! My home has 2 bedrooms but please note I only allow 2 guests. In the main bedroom overlooking the garden you will enjoy a plush queen size bed, restful nights and birdsong in the morning. The second bedroom I use as my office. Should you need to work there is plentiful desk space with computer and hi-speed internet connection. If you are two people who wish to have separate rooms then there is a fold down murphy bed in this bedroom. For a little break watch the squirrels chasing each other along the fence and through the trees just outside the window. Both bedrooms have ample closet space and an antique chest of drawers in each. The bathroom separates the two bedrooms. It has a roomy tub with shower and has been restored to its original Art Deco theme. |
