A bit of History:
The house as it is today would be dated around the end of the 17th century,
begin of the 18th. The house has the typical style of the traditional house
of this part of the country.
The foundations would be older, they have been compared to the Roman Villa
of Vesqueville (A. Malthys – Archéologica Belgica 159), the
way they are buried on the garden’s side would be an evidence of it.
The three-cells model: humans, live stock, reserves: all under the same
slate roof, the hood, called the « tchépo » allowed to
do farm work protected from the bad weather.
Inside, we find the same intelligence: the opening are on the Southern
side, the large open fire was warming the « pel » through the
cast-iron plate (or contrecœur). This one deserves some explanation:
it has been made in Orval during the Jansenist period (1st quarter of the
18th century).
In the central part, the three theological virtues: Faith, eyes covered;
Hope, the anchor; and Charity, a burning hart. The four other women are
the cardinal virtues: Force (column), Justice (sword), Temperance (cup),
Prudence (mirror and snake). The sentence "Ardet Amans Spe Nixa Fides":
The Faith supported by Hope burns from the fire of Charity.
Why is this cast-iron plate reversed? The only reason we have found would
be linked to the French Revolution, no house was allowed to bear religious
signs, but getting rid off such a good cast-iron plate was not the kind
of thing we do in the Ardenne, it would have then been reversed, waiting
for better days.
Have a good stay!
