We live in apartment block in Šiška District (Slovene: Četrtna skupnost Šiška) or simply Šiška ( pronunciation (help•info)) is the most populous of the city districts of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Several cultural monuments are located in Šiška, among them St. Bartholomew's Church, built in the 13th century and remodeled between 1933 and 1936 by the Slovene architect Jože Plečnik. Jože Plečnik also designed the Church of Saint Francis in Šiška. Koseze Pond, a part of the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship, and a part of Tivoli Park are located in the Šiška District. Slovenia lies in the heart of Europe, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean and the Pannonian Plain meets the Karst. This small green country measures 20,273 km2 in area, and is home to sincere, hospitable people of great diligence. It has an exceptional number of top athletes (Tina Maze), and a wealth of cultural creativity. Slovenia has a population of two million. One of the first things you notice on arriving in Slovenia is the extraordinary variety and diversity of landscapes. Driving across Slovenia creates the impression that in a very short space of time you have driven across several countries. Mighty Alpine peaks with sheer faces, deep karst caves and potholes, softly rounded hills and vast plains: Slovenia has all of these. There are also beautiful lakes and bubbling brooks, the silence of forests and the crashing waves of the sea. All these natural riches mean that Slovenia offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities. In the morning you could be skiing in a mountain ski resort, the afternoon could find you strolling along the shore of the Adriatic Sea or pampering yourself in a spa in the east of Slovenia, while in the evening you could be attending a cultural event at the other end of the country. In the midst of this busy schedule, time can nevertheless still be found for gastronomic pleasures. You can get from the coastal town of Koper to Jesenice in the north of the country in under two hours. From Koper to Murska Sobota in the far north-east of the country, it will take you roughly three hours by car. In the heart of Europe. Discover why a small European country offers more than you think. Slovenia is a safe country. Wherever you are, even late at night in the cities, you can have no cause for concern. Feel Slovenia. Through natural beauties, gastronomic delights and hospitable people. Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia Population: 277000 Height above sea level beside a river: 298 m Average summer temperature:20 °C Average winter temperature:-2 °C Ljubljana is the capital of a state, but it is small and pretty, easy to get around, and full of surprises. While during winter it is its dreamy central European character that prevails, during summer it has a relaxed Mediterranean feel to it. It is remarkable for its rich tradition, youthful vibrancy, cultural creativity, feel for entertainment, and numerous green spaces. Uniqueness wherever you turn Ljubljana has preserved evidence of all the five millennia of its history, including, among others, the remains of the Roman city of Emona and the old city centre with its medieval castle and beautiful buildings with Baroque façades, decorative portals and uneven roofs. Other significant bits in the mosaic of Ljubljana are its picturesque bridges across the river Ljubljanica and its vast Tivoli park, stretching into the very city centre. In the second half of the 20th century, it was the world famous architect Jože Plečnik that put an indelible personal stamp on his native city, and the so called Plečnik's Ljubljana ranks among the 20th century's most prominent total works of art. Ljubljana's appearance was further shaped by Plečnik's pupils and a whole new wave of renowned young Slovenian architects. A city of culture Ljubljana is a vibrant centre of creativity where cultural activity has become a way of life. It boasts one of the world's oldest philharmonics. Each year it host more than 10,000 cultural events, from prestigious music, theatre and art events to those pertaining to alternative and avant-garde culture. The most convenient base for exploring Slovenia Ljubljana's surrounding areas, packed with natural beauty and cultural sights bearing witness to the city's dynamic history, are well known for their walking, hiking and cycle trails and traditional culinary delights. As distances within Slovenia are short, Ljubljana is a perfect base for exploring Slovenia's diverse beauty. Within a single day you can visit the coast and high mountains and experience the Mediterranean, Alpine and continental climate.
