This is a private casa surrounded by a large gated garden exploding with flowers, fruit trees and herbs. A grand veranda fronts the house and looks out upon the garden. On the roof is an enormous patio garden for soaking up some sun and blue sky, or viewing the always stunning sunsets over the lake.
The casa sits in a very traditional Mexican neighborhood, with children playing outside the garden gate and fiestas a frequent occurrence. Fondas and tiendas line the streets, making shopping easy and nourishing, delicious meals convenient. Located just a short walk to the malecon (boardwalk) on the shore of Mexico's largest lake, Lago Chapala, the scenery is stunning from the front garden to the shore and throughout this vibrant artisan’s pueblo. A central bus station is a 10 minute walk away, and we are 30 minutes from Guadalajara airport (inexpensive pickup can be arranged). Bus times to the Pacific Ocean (ie. Puerto Vallarta/Manzanilla) or Mexico City are only 3-5 hours. Surrounded by mountains, the views are stunning all year round. Ajijic is an artist community, hosting elaborate, gorgeous murals, virtually constant gallery openings (most are free) and endless celebrations with music, food, and traditional costumes. The area is known as "The Land of Eternal Spring" and indeed that is an apt description. Flowers are abundant and opulent, tropical birds flock here, and the climate is unbelievably mild, warm, and sunny. A large expatriate community makes it possible to function fairly well without much Spanish. |
