Munich is the capital and the largest city of the German state of Bavaria and the third largest city in Germany. About 1.42 million people live within the city limits (Feldkirchen Kreis München belongs to it). The city's motto is "München mag dich" (Munich likes you). Before 2006, it was "Weltstadt mit Herz" (Cosmopolitan city with a heart). Its native name, München, is derived from the Old High German Munichen, meaning "by the monks' place". Munich lies on the elevated plains of Upper Bavaria, about 50 km (31.07 mi) north of the northern edge of the Alps, at an altitude of about 520 m (1,706.04 ft). If you like to visit : Marienplatz, Englischer Garten, Karlsplatz, Frauenkirche, Deutsches Museum are some places to go, among much others ! If you are a football fan, don’t forget to get tickets to see the “Bayern München” play or train at the Allianz Arena ! If you want to see something very amazing : on a stretch of the river known as the Eisbach - a tributary of the Isar which runs directly through the Englischer Garten - avid surfers can practice their skills without ever leaving the city! Though Munich is hundreds upon hundreds of miles from any coastline, a "permanent" wave, produced as the river's waters shoot from an underground tunnel, allows for some pretty radical river surfing. The water comes out of the tunnel at about 5 meters per second and only one person can surf at a time. Nevertheless, polite German surfers wait their turn to enjoy this awesome city activity. |
