Tarragona, Catalonia -- Spanish City with Roman CharacterClick to see Home Exchange offers in Catalonia, Spain Tarragona is the name of a province of eastern Spain, in the southern part of the autonomous community of Catalonia. It is also the name of the province's capital, a very interesting ancient town. It takes about one hour to drive here from Barcelona. With the population of about 100 thousand,Taragona is much smaller and quieter than Barcelona but no less attractive to a visitor's eye.
The best known street of Tarragona is Rambla Nova. It leeds to an open area known as Balco del Mediterrani (Mediterranean balcony). From here you can enjoy the view of the sea, beach, port, and amphitheatre.
Roman Amphitheatre is a UNESO World Heritage site. Built in the 2nd century A.D. at the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, the amphitheatre's capacity was up to 13,000 spectators. It was designed for gladiator combats and animal hunts enjoyed by many back then.
Apart from the Roman Amphitheatre the Roman ruins of Tarraco (Tarragona’s name in Roman times) include also the circus, the walls, the forum, and a few other buildings featured at “Ruta Romana”. The street called Carrer Major will lead you to the magnificent Cathedral in both Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Stairs leading from Cathedral back to Carrer Major will take you to Gothic arcades – old medieval marketplace dating from 14 century. Gothic arcades Take your time and explore many of the narrow, cobbled, colorful streets. If you happen to be here around siesta time you can enjoy the Spanish cuisine at a great number of tapa bars and restaurants. Tarragona is the place where you can enjoy not only the Mediterranean beach life but also immerse yourself in the the Roman and medieval history.
